Our Rituals

Every time you practice yoga, you are confirming that you are important and that your body, mind and soul is important to you. The practice of yoga is a time to connect within. In every class, I remind my students that they are connecting to their hearts, dreams, desires and breath. It’s a ritual that we build, everyday. As Swami Vishnudevananda with the Sivananda Lineage says, “Health is wealth. Peace of mind is happiness. Yoga shows the way.”

What we do, over and over again, becomes our life. Where we spend our time is where we live meaning that the time you put in to whatever task you are doing, you are building and growing that energy in your life. Stepping onto the yoga mat is taking care of oneself and creating a ritual.

Life will pass us by, no one is immune from that but where we place our energy and what we do with our time is, for the most part, our choice. What do you do every single day? What are you feeding in your life? What are you growing?

One ritual that I have is waking up with the sun. It’s a practice that I got into early on in my yoga journey. I used to teach 6am yoga classes for years so I would wake up at 4:30am to prepare myself. At first it was hard. Waking up early meant I had to be in bed early. For a while I lived in Long Island City where I would take a cab over the 59th Street Bridge into Manhattan and in the summer, the sun would rise as I went over the bridge. There is something magical about witnessing the sun peaking through and illuminating everything it touches. While I don’t teach a 6am class anymore, I still practice getting up early because it makes me feel connected to the sun, earth, sky and life.

What do you do every day that makes you feel good? Feel free to comment below.
